Fairfield Community Fire Chief William Jacobs stated today that current and forecasted weather conditions for this area have improved and would allow for controlled outdoor burning.

Shown below are several Outdoor Fire Safety Instructions for your use and reference.

CHECK CONDITIONS:
It is unsafe to burn during high winds and should only be attempted with calm wind conditions. Use common sense before it becomes unsafe. Sudden wind change is the how most fires get out of control.

CHECK REGULATIONS:
Please check with your local Townships and Boroughs concerning outside burning regulations. As a reminder, ANYTIME you plan on doing any outside burning you MUST CALL the Adams County Department of Emergency Services at (717) 334-8101.

LOOK UP:
Do not burn under low hanging tree limbs or utility lines.

LOOK AROUND:
Ensure you are at least 25 ft from any structure or vehicle and at least 15 ft from any property line. Ant adult should be in constant attendance until all fire, embers, and coals are completely extinguished prior to leaving.

BE PREPARED:
Ensure fire control tools (shovel, rakes, etc.) and a water supply are present and readily available. The water supply can be a fire extinguisher or garden hose. Make sure to test them before igniting the fire to be sure it works properly. If you're using a garden hose, ensure the water supply is turned on and that there are no leaks in the hose.

ONCE YOU"VE FINISHED BURNING:
Follow the information provided below from Smokey Bear to ensure your fire has been extinguished properly.

Drown - Pour lots of water on the fire until the hissing sound stops, drowning all the embers — don’t extinguish a fire with just dirt or sand.

Stir - Use your shovel to stir the water into the embers, dirt, and sand, and mix well. Scrape any sticks and logs until no embers are exposed or smoldering, not just the red ones.

Drown Again - Continue adding water, dirt, and sand until all material is cool.

Feel - Hover the back of your hand over the ashes to feel that the embers are cool — don’t leave without making sure your fire is entirely out.

HOW TO SAFELY STORE ASHES & EMBERS:
If you're planning to store ashes and embers, please use a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, place it outside on a non-combustible surface at least 10 feet from any structures or flammable materials, Never store them in paper, plastic, or cardboard containers, or on a wooden deck.

BE SAFE!!
