| The Fairfield Community Fire Department is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to support Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 4-10. The initiative highlights the role of safe charging practices in preventing lithium-ion battery fires. Every individual can help prevent these incidents by making wise choices every time they charge an electronic device.
Key Focus: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety
The 2026 campaign highlights the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries found in everyday electronics like smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and power tools.
Essential Safety Rules • Use Approved Equipment: Always use the manufacturer-approved charger and cord that came with your specific device. • Hard Surfaces Only: Charge devices on flat, hard surfaces (like a table or desk) rather than soft surfaces like beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can trap. • Unplug When Full: Remove devices from the charger once they reach a full charge. • Outdoor Charging: Charge larger e-mobility devices (e-bikes and scooters) outdoors and away from primary exit paths. • Discontinue Use: Stop using a device immediately if it becomes overly hot, begins swelling, emits smoke, or gives off a strange odor.
