| Currently Fire Danger is MODERATE. Please be careful as we are experiencing dry windy conditions in our area. As reported in the Gettysburg Times this week, Fairfield Fire Chief William Jacobs stated; "Existing drought conditions places Adams County at high risk for field fires." Please remember the following: All fine dead fuels ignite easily, and fires can begin from many causes. Unattended brush and campfires may escape and spread. Fires move quickly, and short distance spotting is common. High-intensity burning may occur on slopes or in areas with large amounts of fine fuel. Fires can become serious and difficult to control unless contained quickly while still small.
Only burn on calm days and make sure to check all local and state regulations before starting any burn. Always ensure campfires, stove ashes, and burn barrel debris are completely extinguished. Each year, fire crews respond to fires caused by residents burning leaves. The safest method for burning leaves is inside a designated burn barrel. Keep a water source and shovel nearby at all times, and never leave a fire unattended. When finished, saturate the area with water, use a shovel to move debris, and water again. Store cooled debris in a metal airtight container to prevent it from reigniting.
If you plan to burn at your residence, call the Adam’s County Emergency Center in advance. The non-emergency phone number is 717-334-8101.
